JOB SUMMARY:

The selected candidate will be responsible for the detailed electrical physical, schematic and wiring design for transmission and distribution voltage substation protection & control projects. These projects may require communication with several clients and a minimal amount of site visits for design data collection, verification and inspections.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Completes physical and/or protection & control engineering design packages which may include one-line, three-line, electrical plan/layout, grounding and conduit plans/layouts, electrical details, elevations, section views, relay & communications panel layouts, DC and AC elementaries/schematics, alarm schematics, communication schematics, wiring diagrams (panels, equipment, interconnection), bill of wire/cable schedule, conduit schedules and bill of materials. 

  • Creates or modifies relay panel layouts, AC and DC elementary/schematic drawings and wiring diagrams using applicable standards, “go by” and/or codes. 

  • Uses equipment manufacturer’s drawings to complete project’s physical, elementary/schematic and wiring diagrams drawings. 

  • Obtains, interprets and utilizes information, drawings, standards and documents from client’s information database and systems to utilize in the project design.

  • Obtains and interprets elementary drawings from client to complete engineering and wiring of certain projects.

  • Develops AC, DC,  and Voltage Drop Calculations.

  • Performs QA/QC reviews.

  • Owns and manages the technical aspects of each project from initial scope/assignment to project close out including construction support, when needed, and completion of As Built drawings.

  • Carry outs other engineering/wiring activities related to but not limited to those mentioned above. 

  • Incorporates safety and reliability into all design solutions by establishing and maintaining proper clearance requirements for substation equipment and the safe work practices as established by the NESC and OSHA.

  • Communicates constantly, professionally and openly with peers and clients to verify and understand client’s requirements for the successful completion of each project as well as strengthen the partnership with our clients.

  • Provides technical assistance and training to less experienced technician(s) and/or Engineer(s) (Engineering I or II).

  • Works cohesively with all peer engineers and company management which may be in various geographic locations.

  • Provides honest and constructive feedback to improve internal processes and procedures.

  • Utilizes scheduling tools to assist in the progression of projects.

  • Constantly adds value to projects and our client’s business objectives.

  • Provides an exceptional internal and external customer service by providing exceptional response time and implement client/employee feedback

OTHER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attends work as scheduled, for up to 8 hours at a time (which does not include a lunch break), 5 days a week, in a PowerWright office or remote location.

  • Prompt and regular attendance at a remote worked location.

  • Ability to work shifts beginning as an assigned, designated start time until an assigned, designated end time.

  • Ability to complete assigned tasks/projects in a timely manner and as specified.

  • Ability to manage and enhance current and future client relationships.

  • Ability to interact with employees and customers/clients in an appropriate manner.

  • Exhibit and maintain the highest degree of professionalism in the performance of all related duties.

  • Ability to receive and understand directions from supervision and management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-10 years of experience in Substation / P&C engineering design.

  • At least a 4 year engineering/technical degree.

  • Professional License (PE) is a plus.

  • Substation/P&C field experience is a plus.

  • Utility and/or consulting engineering firm experience is a plus.

  • Experience with conceptual designs and engineering cost estimates is a plus.

  • Direct stroke, AC & DC, voltage drop, lighting, grounding and rigid bus studies experience is a plus.

  • Proficiency with ETAP, SES CDEGS ,SKM software is a plus.

  • Substation 3D design or modeling experience is a plus.

  • Metal Clad and/or GIS Switchgear experience is a plus.

  • Fire Protection / Mitigation experience is a plus.

  • Control Enclosure design experience is a plus.

  • AutoCAD, Bentley Microstation or Bluebeam Revu experience is a plus

TRAVEL:

This position may require travel to client’s offices approximately 5-10% of the time. The person is this position may be required to drive an vehicle. Travel may be necessary by vehicle (as a driver or a passenger) or by airplane.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This job operates in a professional office environment requiring routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, electronic devices such as tablets, printers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets as well as use of standard office applications such as MS Office (including extensive use of video communication and collaboration platform), and internet based filing system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to clearly communicate, talk and hear. The employee is frequently requested to sit, stand and walk including walking unassisted for a minimum of 500 meters to perform field visits/field assignments. Manual dexterity is required. The wearing and use of client and company specified PPE is required. Some light physical effort is required.
